Adams The Destroyer Halts Railways In Their Tracks

And so it begins... With the traditional first game showers and rustiness the 2006 Pevensey cricket season bandwagon starts rolling. A new friendly fixture this year the Eastbourne Railway side choo-chooed into the PCG. With new Sunday Skipper Perko a late withdrawl, Vice-Skip Plum took over the reigns and unsurprisingly elected to bat. Even less surprise followed when he himself walked out to open... On a slow wicket stroke-play was difficult and runs had to be earned. Plum, although dropped on 4, and Smudge plugged away against a keen attack and slowly began to hit the boundaries. Plum departed to a sharp catch in the covers trying to force the pace but this only brought Uphill Dave to the crease. With his third scoring shot a massive six, Dave immediately signalled his intent, and as Smudges timing improved, runs flowed. After Daves departure for a rapid 46 Smudge upped the ante and brought up his 50 with a towering six. A middle order stutter as Smudge, Keely, and Craig were dismissed cheaply left us at 184-5 before a late heave from Rob took Pev to 206 and Plum declared. After a lovely tea we took the field and immediately had the Railways in trouble. Rob and Stu with the new ball took a wicket a piece before the Adams Snr and Fielder Jnr show took over. The combination of age and enthusiasm was too much for the Railways middle and lower order as 7 wickets fell for 16 runs. Andy "The Destroyer" Adams finishing with a career-best 5-14, as he cleverly varied his flight and guile, and occasional obscure sledging, to considerable effect. Some good early season catching and fielding was epitomised by a superb one-handed pick up by Tel at first slip off a soft edge, when many were sure he'd fallen asleep. A last wicket flurry made the score respectable and was the least the Railways deserved for their efforts. A good game had by all involved, and the nickname count has had massive early season input.

30/04/2006 v. Heathfield Park (A) Won by 111 Runs Pev 234-7 Dec'd 35 Overs Heathfield Park 117ao 31.2 Overs

Vintage Wallis and a Russty Debut

On a cold, cold, blustery, cold afternoon, the Pev travelled to Heathfield for their second fixture of the season. ColdLosing the toss (makes a change), a strong Pev were kindly allowed to bat first and Plum and Wally donned pads, vests and jumpers first up. Encouraged by our superb Pev travelling fan base, the pair started off well with Wally particularly brutal on anything loose, and Plum just particularly brutal. Plum was bowled playing inside a good Bentley seamer when set , before Tings, looking good at the crease, failed to ground his bat in time as momentum carried him outside (imagine something similar to the QE2 turning…). All this time Wally was oozing class, smashing boundaries to all parts, and joined by Smudge, last weeks star, the two compiled a rapid 70. Then followed the traditional collapse as Smudge, Mark, Pies and Louis fell in quick succession. During the rot, one end remained defiant and marvellous, Wally completing a sparkling century with another short ball smashed through mid-wicket. Wally enjoys a rare calm moment during his centuryEventually retiring on 132 (from 87 balls with 22 fours and 2 sixes), it was left to Dave and debutant Russ to pulverise a last 31 runs, including a money-shot tree-hitting 4 from Dave. Set 235 to win, Heathfield Park were immediately on the back foot as Russ and Tel applied pressure from both ends. Russ capped a glorious debut with two prize wickets and Tel showed this year will be no different to the previous 75 with his usual tease and guile. Backed up by fine fielding and catching in difficult conditions, wickets fell regularly and it was left to M March to spare Heathfield blushes with a murderous 48. March and the tail were eventually cleaned up by the effortless trundle of Tingles, wrapping up a fine team effort. Later on we were treated to the sight of a couple more fine maidens, The Star in Heathfield providing great scenery, I’d recommend it.

14/07/2006 v. Asburnham (A) 20 Over Match. Won by 154 Runs. Pev 228-3 Ash'm 74ao

Crash, Bang, Wall-Op

In a rearranged friendly Pev travelled to Ashburnham with a strong side and upon winning the toss, Captain for the day Plum, had no hesitation in batting. The Skipper and Wally opened the innings and initially found scoring difficult on a slow wicket with a bit of occasional lift. Plum particularly struggled to pick up runs and departed trying to force the pace. Only 19 had come from the first 4 overs. This brought pinch-hitter Russty to the crease who announced his intentions with a sumptuous cover drive for four off his first ball. As the bowling tired Wally and Russ teed off. Runs flowed to all parts of the small ground, further aided by the fast outfield. Russty smashed 37 off only 23 balls and helped add 147 for the 2nd wicket. Wally was massacring everything that was bowled at him, his 50 arriving off only 27 balls. Straight drives for 6, deft touches to third man for 4, pulls screaming past fielders, every shot in the book was executed and more often than not hit to the boundary or indeed over it. Balls became an endangered species as all Pev spare batsmen and spectators were employed searching. His hundred arrived off only 16 further balls, and his eventual 171* came off only 70 balls, including 22 fours and 11 sixes. We believe this to be a new club record score, an amazing display of power, touch, and concentration. Just to rub salt into the wounds Mark Ridpath completed the innings with 22* off 8 balls including 3 sixes, as he helped take 21 off the last over, and Pev closed on 249-3 Ashburnham needed a good (great) start if they were to get anywhere near the total, however, having taken 6 off the first over, they only took 9 from the next 5. Louis was his usual frugal self, only conceding 10 from his 3 overs, including a maiden, and Rob tore into the Ashburnham batting; Astel (5) and Matthews (0) sliced catches to Plum at point, Brucker (2) chipped a clever slower ball to Smudge at mid-wicket, and next ball, Baker could only glove a brute of a ball to Pedro behind the stumps for a first baller, leaving Ashburnham 15-4 off 6 overs and in desperate trouble. Rob finished his spell with 3-1-5-4. Meikel threatened a brief resistance with a mature 29, until he was eventually deceived by Smudger, and Harmer hit a quick 19 at the end, but the rest folded. Tom Smith picked up 4-2-11-3 aided by two sharp stumpings from Pedro, and Perko claeaned up the tail with 2-5, as Ashburnham were bowled out for 74 to complete a resounding victory.
