09/05/2009 v. Hailsham (a)
Won by 75 Runs Pev 172 ao Hailsham 97ao
Holey's Preposterous Cabbage
On a lovely spring day, Pevensey travelled to Hailsham to open their 2009 league campaign. With a squad bolstered by new signing, Ronnie Corbishley, and the return to fitness of the old master, Tingles, Pev were looking to begin the season well. Wally lost the toss and Pev were duly inserted. On a track with mixed pace, Plum and Wally started well and both opened up with some eye catching strokes, most notably Wally straight driving for four and Plum smashing a cover driven six. However, as the partnership reached 40 and looked to build, Wally was LBW playing across a straight one for 20. Plum and Tings kept the momentum going and Pev looked comfortable at 72-1. However, Plum then drilled straight to mid-off for 34, in what would be the highest score of the game, and Gav then followed shortly afterwards, bowled for a duck, as Pev stumbled to 74-3. Tings (14) and Uphill took the score to 104 before both fell to loose shots, Tings giving Thomas a second chance at a mid-off steepler, and Uphill playing on to a full bunger. Uphill in particular will be disappointed having looked in sublime touch with four fours in his 18. With two new batsmen at the crease and the score 104-5, Hailsham were in the ascendancy. But the strength of Pev's middle order told, as Louis and Holey put together the highest partnership of the game, 41, for the sixth wicket. Both batsmen looked solid, while putting away the bad balls. Louis's 25 was punctuated with some gorgeous cover driving, while Holey was content to biff down the ground in his 15. The partnership came at a crucial time and the momentum was with the Pev as Pedro closed the innings with a pair of hard hit boundaries before running himself out and Pev were all out for 172. Tea was a fromage based feast with a bounty of cheese and coleslaw sandwiches, and a fantastic variety of corn based snacks. With the track difficult to score runs on Pev knew they needed a good start to build the pressure. Opening with Ronnie and Rob, the openers found runs were hard to come by as wicket to wicket lines paid dividends. The opening wicket should have come in Rob's second over as Blunt failed to keep his foot behind the line for a tight stumping, alas it was missed. In Rob's next over however, Wilkinson was pinned in front by a yorker for 12 to give Rob his first wicket of the season. His second came shortly afterwards as Blunt, dropped by Pedro the over before, failed to make the most of his two lives and edged to Tingles at slip, who pouched it expertly. Dawber connected with a few lusty blows, including a big six off Ronnie, but the introduction of Holey led to him hitting straight to Uphill at mid-on. Jarvis hit out in a 9-ball 18, but played one shot too many in Gav's first over and spiralled a thick edge to Plum at point, before Brettany chipped Holey straight to Phil Bilby at mid-wicket for a duck. At 58-5, Hailsham veterans Hugh Thomas and Dean Noakes consolidated and attempted to counter attack in a partnership of 20. Thomas in particular struck some lusty blows in his 15 but sliced Holey to point where Plum just about clung the ball to his gut, and Noakes followed for 16, again slicing Holey, and Rob took the catch running back from gully. Holey rolled back the years with an immaculate display of line and length to finish with the splendid figures of 4-21, but this was outdone by another veteran Phil, unlucky not to complete what would have been the catch of the season, who took over from Holey and ripped through the Hailsham tail with his off-cutters, bowling Scott for 3 and pinning Tomlin LBW for 1, to finish with 2-0. The end was nigh and new signing Ronnie finally got in on the act, as Hunt got a fine edge behind and Pedro snaffled it one-handed to secure the victory with 11 over's to spare. A great team effort as everybody contributed to the victory and 30 points, a lovely start to the season.
16/05/2009 v. Newick (h) Won by 30 Runs Pev 150 ao Newick 120 ao
Lower Order Heroics as Skipper Bill-ows Through
On a blustery showery day, Pev welcomed Newick to the PCG for their first home league game of the season. With the track moist from overnight rain, winning the toss was important. Acting Skipper Phil duly lost it and the openers padded up. Phil and Plum opened up in the absence of James and made a bright start, reaching 14-0 in the third over. However, in the same over Plum (5) drove gently to give Murphy a sharp caught and bowled and Tingles followed the very next ball to an unplayable delivery that bounced and left him and was pouched at second slip. When Gav (2) followed in the next over, LBW to Thacker, the scoreboard read 17-3 with all the specialist batsmen taking a bench. Wickets continued to fall and Phil (5) was next to go, bowled round his legs by one that cut back from Thacker and then Craig (8), after two defiant boundaries, was turned around by Murphy and second slip took his second catch of the game. The scoreboard read a depressing 39-5 and an early finish was on the cards. Louis and Holey then did exactly what they did last week, played with grit and patience and waited for any loose ball. With Murphy and Thacker bowling with real skill and persistence the pair survived several lucky breaks, however, with the pitch offering some variable bounce and lateral movement, any batsmen would need some luck. The pair forged 46 runs, with Louis again looking in good touch and driving confidently through and over the covers. The pair were separated when Holey drilled a loose ball from Bell straight to point for10 and in the true fashion of a partnership, Louis fell the next over, chipping a return catch to Thacker for a very well played 48. Russty (7) and the Nugget (5) were both outdone by the wily Thacker as Pev again slumped to 110-9. Graeme was joined by last batsman Rob and the Newick bowlers scented tea. However, with Rob stone walling like a good 'un at one end, Graeme was slowly able to pick up ones and twos and even a couple of 3's as the pair ran their hearts out. With the tired seam bowlers out of the attack, some boundaries began to flow against the spinners, including a toe-ended straight six from Graeme. When Murphy was re-introduced Rob even had the audacity to smote him over point when he dropped short and wide. The partnership had reached 40 when Rob was pinned LBW by Allum, however, it had taken the Pev score to an unlikely 150 on a pitch that was still offering bowlers assistance. Pev took to the field for a short spell before tea and second ball had the crucial early breakthrough as the Nugget tore through the defences of Jones to hit middle stump. It was almost a dream start as Murphy edged the next ball to slip but Tingles could not cling on. With attacking fields for the Nugget and Graeme Allum and Murphy began to pick up some boundaries and the score raced to 38-1. However, the ageless Holey entered the fray to pick up Allum in his first over, playing on a short ball. Tea was taken with the scoreboard 43-2 and the match far from over. Holey's home made tea was an exhibition of farmhouse cuisine. Thick cut egg sandwiches, two varieties of cake, and large dollops of jam and cream on the scones meant the return to the field became less appealing by the portion. When play resumed Rob took up the attack from the pavilion end and had a wicket in his first over, trapping Waylett with a yorker on his back foot for a duck. With Rob and Holey finding their lines scoring became difficult and the pressure began to build. This led to Rob's second wicket as he trapped Murphy LBW playing an ambitious pull shot to a ball that skidded on to him. Just to clarify what would have happened, in a real life hawkeye, he kindly threw the ball onto the stumps. Newick had slipped to 49-4 which became 60-5 when Graeme superbly held Holland one-handed at silly mid-on to give Holey his second wicket. Thacker joined Caldwell and the pair began to counter attack as the bowlers tired. Punishing the loose ball, the pair took the score to 90-5 and the match perhaps tilted back in Newick's favour. Skipper Phil had other ideas though and introduced his off cutters with immediate turn and bounce in a lethal spell. He first bowled Caldwell, who had started to open up, clipping the top of his off stump for 26, then next over bowled the dangerous Thacker for 19. With these two gone Pev scented victory and Phil picked up his third and fourth wicket in his next two overs as Douglas and Bell departed for ducks; Douglas caught at gully to one that moved across him and Bell smearing an ugly shot to mid-on. With the fall of Bell, Phil had the remarkable figures of 4-0! He eventually conceded a few runs and a catch was dropped but the Skipper would not be stopped and claimed the final wicket, trapping Gill LBW for 17 to seal the victory by 30 runs, an amazing turnaround from earlier in the day. Phil's final dazzling figures were 6.3-4-6-5, as the tail failed to cope with him, but it was the team effort again as a whole that had won the game. Another 30 points, nose-bleed territory!
23/05/2009 v.
Polegate and Stone Cross (a) Won by 7 Wickets P &
S 71ao Pev 73-3
Corbishley Shows Credentials
New man, Graeme finally bowled the superb and sustained spell Pev have ben waiting for as he ripped though Polegate's line up. He was backed up by another dazzling display from Bill with 3 wickets for very little and in double quick time. In days gone by the early losses of Plum and Bill would have led to an inevitable Pev collapse and a close finish but the batters are made of sterner stuff this year. Louis played the perfect aggressive innings to take us in sight of victory and experienced heads Tings and Andy saw us to the end without any problem. All over by tea resulting in browny points at home for all concerned - so a good result all round!
30/05/2009 v. Buxted Park (h) Won
by 66 Runs Pev 154-9 Buxted 88ao
Old Hands Rip Through Buxted
On a beautiful summer's day, Pev welcomed Buxted Park to the Rec. With several batsmen missing and the returning Skipper still half-fit, it was a bad toss to lose and the unfamiliar opening partnership of Plum and 1st XI debutant and Lord of the Dance, Martyn, padded up. After a slow start against tight bowling, Plum opened up with some hard hit boundaries. With Martyn looking solid the partnership reached 38 before he played a loose shot and was caught behind for 11. Louis, promoted to 3, followed soon afterwards in the same fashion, to leave the score at 41-2. The Skipper entered the fray and was immediately struggling with his running, however Plum was timing the ball nicely as he cruised to 45. He was out on the verge of drinks though as he dabbed at a loose prod and was superbly snaffled at slip by Burgess. Will, another 1st XI debutant, came and went with one pleasant boundary to his name, before Holey was cleaned up by a straight one. Bill entered the fray and the two Skippers showed grit and determination to get Pev back on track. They took the score to 121 before James was finally out, caught at long-on for a hard fought 30. Wickets then fell at regular intervals as Huxley played on the batsman's concentration and patience with a superbly controlled spell of pace bowling. Pedro was caught and bowled (3), Graeme was bowled by one that kept low (3), and Rob ran himself out stupidly for a duck. However, the Nugget showed sterner stuff to finish undefeated. All the while they came and went, Bill was able to open his shoulders and his 26* took Pev to a respectable 154-9, and as Graeme's dismissal had shown the pitch was displaying some variable bounce. Huxley finished with the excellent 6-42 in 21 over's, impressive hard work on a hot day. Tea was another debut, Graeme's first effort, and what a pleasant 'Surprise' it was. The usual classics mixed with a few new delicacies, including crumpets with jam and Kinder Eggs! Pev took the field with the Nugget fired up on caffeine based drinks and his pace and bounce troubled both Buxted openers. It was only a matter of time before he took a wicket and it duly came as he bowled Ferns (6). He should have had his second next ball as a ferocious ball was edged by Burgess and flew between first and second slip. He and Billings took the score to 30-1 before the next wicket fell. Rob's first (and only decent) ball, an in-swinging yorker, beat Billings and clipped his off stump on the way through. Burgess followed shortly afterwards, chipping a full toss to mid-off to give Graeme a deserved wicket and leave Buxted 38-3. Hopkins was given a flying start in Rob's wayward spell and looked classy as he and Millar took the score to 71-3. However, the evergreen Holey made a double breakthrough. Firstly he finally managed a correct LBW appeal as Millar (7) tried to hit him across the line and then had Hopkins stumped with an awesome piece of work by Pedro. With the two set batsmen out, the middle and lower order could not cope with Holey's lines and Bills tweakers. Bill claimed Dew (2) bowled, and Holey had Miles (1) caught at short mid-off by Martyn. Bill then had Raymond (0) superbly caught by James, lunging forwards at short mid-wicket and Holey cleaned up Olive (0), who paid the price for staying on his back foot on a wearing track and then gave the bail a send-off on his walk back which no-one likes to see. Bill claimed the final wicket as he pinned Buxted's bowling hero Huxley LBW for another duck as they were all out for 85, having been 71-3. Holey finished with 4-12 and Bill 3-8 as Pevensey's pressure in the field and depth of bowling again came to the fore in a testing match. The victory was duly celebrated with copious amounts of ale and a curry as the social season opened up in style.

Uphill's Pair Of Maidens
In an otherwise disappointing performance,
club favourite Uphill Dave finally took his maiden wicket for the Pev
and added the icing with his maiden league fifty. Dropped catches cost
pev dearly as Purdey was shelled several times in his 84 that
underpinned the Eastbourne innings. Then in the latter stages, when the
slog was on, further catches were dropped that allowed Eastbourne to
reach 212-5. With a side missing numerous batsmen this was going to be
too many and the only ray of light was Uphill's 52, in a paltry 124 all
out.
11/07/2009 v. Newick (a) Lost by 7 Wickets
Pev 154-9 Newick 155-3
Russty's Reggae Sauce Fails To Dry Out Pev
On a wet and miserable afternoon , Pev
travelled to Newick hoping to end their losing run. Arriving absurdly
early, Pev refused to indulge in their usual pre-match Harveys and
instead got ready to play. It was just as well heads were clear as
Newick opened up with some seriously quick (and short) bowling as Bell
steamed in from his usual end, the Bell End. However, the only success
he had was in forcing the batsmen to don helmets as Pev plodded along to
33-0. However, the more moderate pace and guile of Thacker proved more
succesful. He dismissed James, Gravy, Jack and Louis in a 7 over burst
and was unlucky not to have more. At 54-5 Pev were struggling as the
rain got heavier. But the old heads of russty and Holey got together to
put on 67 priceless runs. Russty was in devastating form but was cruely
dismissed for 49, one short of a deserved fifty. Some nervous scuttling
from the tail against the returning Bell took the total to 154 which
represented a decent comeback but still seemed below par. By this stage
the match was being played in a full on drizzle downpour and Pev bowlers
and fielders slid everywhere. Rob claimed the first wicket of Carter
but was unlucky not to have more as batsmen played an dmissed regularly
and catches were put down in the slippery conditions. He eventually had
Allum, probably bored of Rob's chat, caught at mid-on heaving, and
Louis cleaned up Symonds, who clearly hadn't been watching the track at
all, but after some nervy moments early on Waylett looked good to see
Newick home with his 71*. Miserable day. Great club bar though and
Harveys in the showers was splendid.
18/07/2009 v. Hailsham (h) Match Drawn
Hailsham 175-9 Pev 146-8
Skipper's Efforts Thwarted By Rain Interval
With three defeats in a row, Pev were
anxious to get back to some semblance of form. Winning the toss James
handed the ball to Graeme and Rob and it was Rob who made the early
breakthrough, cleaning up Dawber as he tried to slog a length ball early
in his innings. When Wilkinson became Rob's second victim to a fine
edge, and Jarvis and Kennedy were both snaffled at slip by the Skipper
off Graeme, Hailsham were reeling at 25-4. Wright wore a few early on
before swinging the bat for a quick 23, but it was Ambler who looked a
class act in his 48 and held the innings together. His and Boorer's (33)
hard graft took Hailsham to a solid 108-6 but it was the hard hitting
Brettany (20 including two monster sixes) who added impetus to the
innings and 175-9 represented an excellent fightback. Plum and James
looked comfortable in reply to reach 56 before Plum was out and James
continued to go through the gears as he and Tings approached the
hundred. However, a rain interval added some spice to the pitch and the
bowlers suddenly looked a different proposition. Williams cam charging
down the hill and ripped out Tings, Uphill, Bill and Louis in an awesome
four over burst. With Brettany claiming the key wicket of James for 57
Pev had slumped from99-1 to 121-7 after the rain. Pedro
counter-attacked with 22, but with his departure it was left to Graeme
and the Nugget to bat out the draw. An exciting match that swung both
ways and which both teams will feel aggrieved not to have won.
25/07/2009 v. Polegate and Stone Cross (h) Won
by 4 Wickets P&S 97 Pev 101-6
Ace Bowlers Win Day
Pevensey finally returned to winning
ways with a hard fought victory at home to Polegate and Stone Cross.
With James winning a rare toss he asked Polegate to bat and they
negotiated the new ball to reach 20-0 after 10 overs. However, once
Holey made the first breakthrough, and Graeme dismissed the reliable
Hover, the floodgates were opened. With Graeme ripping out the top order
for 4-61, the left was rest to Billy as he ripped through the middle
and lower order for more remarkable figures, this time 11-6-11-5, as
once again batsmen struggled to cope with him. Polegate all out for 97
and the match should've had an easy march to victory. However, Plum fell
in the first over and the middle order was rattled through by Howard as
Pev slumped to 34-4. Gravy and Jack steadied th ship, before Jack and
Holey sealed the victory. At last a victory after seven barren weeks.
01/08/2009 v. Buxted Park (a) Match abandoned
Pev 215-6
Rain Dashes Pev Hopes
With a weakened batting line up Pev's
innings centred around a terrific 56 from senior pro Tingles as they
reached a very competitive 215-6. The match saw the first team debut
proper of another Tingley, as Oliver finally graced the same team sheet
as his father in a competitive match. However, he did not quite emulate
his father's efforts and was out for a duck. More to come from him
though we expect! Rain then had the final say which was unfortunate as
Pev were still fielding an almost full strength bowling line up.
08/08/2009 v. Fletching (h) Lost by 10 Wickets
Pev 118 Fletching 122-0
Plum Only Bright Spot In Dismal Effort
With cricket week still 'fresh' in the Pev
players bodies and minds, it was unfortunate that runaway league leaders
Fletching were the visitors to the PCG. Plum led from the front with an
excellent 50, but nobody else offered much resistance and a paltry 118
all out was the result. The weary bowlers were then dispatched as Lucas
and Stevens romped to the target in only 23 overs, dropped catches did
not help. The dreaded nil-point for the season.
15/08/2009 v. Newhaven (a) Won by 90 Runs
Pev 199-8 Newhaven 109 ao
Awesome Skipper Leads From The Front
Another away jaunt for the Pev as they
looked to finish the season well, this time to the seaside port of
Newhaven. Losing the toss again, James was asked to pad up, and despite
the early loss of Plum, the Skipper and Gravy looked comfortable at
58-1. However, Gravy was LBW for 21 and Tings followed second ball in
the same way, as the score slipped to 58-3. It got worse before it got
better as Bill mishit a full toss, Holey was LBW a long way forwards,
and Louis edged behind as Pev reeled at 91-6. However, cometh the hour
cometh the loon, as the Skipper was joined by new team crazy man
Corbishley. The pair consolidated for a few overs before opening up with
flair. James his classically straight and through the covers while
Graeme was a bundle of over-excited explosions. The pair took the score
to 169 before both departed in consecutive overs, the Skipper for a
classy 71 and Graeme for a crazy 29. The fun did not end there though as
Pedro smeared his way to 20* as he and Rob added another priceless 27
runs for the ninth wicket. Tea was twin-pronged as a great effort from
Barsley saw a platter of chips arrive mid-innings and then a multitude
of flavours meant tea was a pizza-licious affair! The Newhaven chase
began badly as Poulton was cleaned up by Graeme for a duck in the first
over. Both he and Rob bowled with the accuracy required for what was
becoming a two-paced pitch. Godfrey was the next to go, top-edging an
ambitious heave off Rob, before Graeme claimed the key wicket of Khan,
the oft scourge of Pev bowlers. Two Tullett's followed as the openers
had reduced Newhaven to 42-5. A 50 partnership followed with some
sensible hitting from Drury and another Tullett but the introduction of
the Nugget brought the end quickly as his pace ripped through the lower
order for 3-21. 30 points secured and a night out already planned, it
was a good day for the Pev. Huge quantities of beer followed and guest
appearances from the Selmeston side, who now know better then to offer a
lager-laden Gravy a lift!
23/08/2009 v. Tunbridge Wells Borderers (a) Lost
by 5 Wickets Pev 233-6 TWB 234-5
Hole-some Batting Effort Spoilt In Field
Pevensey travelled into Royal Kent to
face a Borderers side facing the possibility of relegation. Borderers
were without their contingent of Springboks, whereas Pev were delighted
to welcome back Darren Stevens into their ranks. Winning the toss, Bill
elected to bat and Plum and Darren opened up. Darren was straight into
his stride and raced to 29 with classy striking all around the ground,
the pick of which was a six flicked over square leg. Plum too took a
liking to the Borderers bowlers and hit his own sweet six with a massive
straight blow. However, with the batsmen in control and the bowlers
already looking deflated at 43-0 off six and a bit overs Darren mistimed
a drive and skied to cover where he was well held. Plum followed soon
after but Gravy and Andy played confident cameos to take the score to
137-4, but no-one went on and Borderers recovered to have Pevslightly on
the rocks. However, Holey entered the fray and quickly got a liking for
the short rugby ground mid wicket area. With seven sixes he was looking
set for a ton, the first of the season, when tragedy struck. Holey was
late to respond to a turned down single from Will, the new Nasser
Hussain of the side, and was run out by a direct hit for 87. Will was
then run out himself for 7, but the pair had added 72 for the fifth
wicket. Billy ensured momentum wasn't lost with a hard hit 15* and Pev
declared on 233-6 off 42 overs. Tea was a fantastic affair, with wide
screen Ashes coverage of Trott smashing the Aussies all over the place
only sweetening the taste. A dropped catch in the first over from the
first ball Bosman faced suggested it would be an easy afternoon for the
Pev however they were sorely disappointed. He went on to hit 115
although he was dropped twice more before he reached his ton. Two more
quick wickets suggested what could have been as lower order batsmen
struggled to cope with the Nugget's fire, but Bosman's innings had
ensured the finishing line could be crossed.
30/08/2009 v. St Peters (h) Won by 27 Runs
Pev 110-9 St Peters 83 ao
Wedding Bells Ring For Victory
With eight first team players unable to play
due to Rob's ill-timed wedding, Pevensey welcomed St Peters to the PCG.
Losing the toss, Pev were invited to bat and struggled to 109-9 with
top scores of 18 from Skipper Bill and 16 from Craig, but perhaps
crucially 23 extras. St Peters reached 17 without loss before Bradders,
dragged from his playboy lifestyle for this one-off match, made the
breakthrough. Little partnerships followed but nobody was able to go as
wickets fell in batches as Graeme bowled a remarkable 15 over spell
claiming 7-46, his best figures of the season, and Russty chipped in
with 2-9. Amidst some bat throwing, St Peters subsided to 83 all out,
and Pev secured a remarkable 26 run victory and 30 points, which bodes
the question, were the other eight missed!?
05/09/2009 v. Eastbourne 3rd XI (a) Match Drawn
E/B 3rd 232-6 Pev 142-9 Pevensey travelled to the Saffrons to face Eastbourne 3rds, who were
looking for maximum points to secure their second place spot. With a
barrel of Harveys as a travelling companion, the day was going to be a
leisurely one. Winning the toss for only the second time this season,
James elected to bowl on a damp wicket. Graeme continued his sublime
form with a quick spell where he was unlucky to only get the wicket of
Mashood (20), driving to cover where Gravy clung on. However, Varney
rarely looked in trouble at the other end and punished anything loose as
he dominated the innings to make 97. Wall (37), Key (21) and Isepp (38
including three sixes in a row) all made attacking cameos as Eastbourne
closed on 232-6. With some fantastic hitting on display, the wickets of
Key and Blackburn were somewhat embarassing as they tried to sweep only
to find it not as easy as on the telly! With a tough target to chase
down, it was made tougher as Eastbourne were able to open with two
second team bowlers and their higher level of appealing told as Plum was
given LBW to a big shout in the first over. Giles Adams beat batsman
repeatedly without success and it was the slow bowlers that took control
as Pev meandered to 37-4 off 18 overs. James and Pedro offered a little
excitement with a stand of 54, and Pedro heaved his way to 47, his
highest for Pev, but another mini collapse left it to Rob to bat out the
last over for a draw. A disappointing anti-climax to a season which
began so well, particularly as the low points allowed St Peters to sneak
above Pev into fourth place. However, with a great debut season for
Graeme, a huge return to form for Billy's tweakers, and the return to
fitness of the Nugget, it can be looked upon as a promising start to the
bowling department, but with no hundreds or hundred partnerships Pev
need to start turning good starts into big scores.
